The AVG frost protection valve (FPV15) was a valve that is designed to protect your solar hot water panels from damage caused by frosts, freezing the water within the solar panels when the outside air temperature levels drops below freezing. Air temperature is monitored by a sensitive wax filled element, which reacts by opening the Frost Valve's seat when it reaches very low ambient temperatures. When this happens the AVG FPV15 valve allowed warmer water from the storage tank to flow up and through the solar hot water panel and out of the FPV until the desired temperature is reached, preventing the water within the solar panels to freeze.
This process may happens multiple times during the day and night when temperatures do not rise. When water in a solar panel freezes, it expands and can cause the copper pipes within the solar panel to rupture.
The AVG FPV15 is now no longer available, however we now stock another brand called RBM to cover the hole left in the market when AVG decided to discontinue their frost valves.
These valves have the same connections, designed slightly better with the frost stem further away from the panel that should prolong life and give more than the 1-3 years you could expect out of the AVG brand
Frost valves are not recommended for frost-prone areas where the temperature remains below 3°C for extended periods of time.
